Pilates is a growing phenomenon that was started by Joseph Pilates in the 1960s.  By emphasizing proper breathing and correct spinal and pelvic alignment, Pilates can completely transform the way your body looks, feels, and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen. There are many benefits of Pilates.

Some of these include:

  • A refreshing mind/body connection
  • By emphasizing proper breathing and correct body positioning, your mind becomes aware of how your body feels.  Pilates focuses on the quality instead of quantity of repitions
  • Build strength without “bulking up”- gain long/lean muscles and flexibility
  • Pilates elongated and strengthens muscles, instead of shortening them. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured
  • Develop a strong core
  • The core consists of a flat abdominal and a strong back.  This is achieved by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle
  • Create an evenly conditioned body and prevent sports injuries
  • Pilates helps to reduce muscular imbalances by strengthening weaker muscles.  No muscle group is over trained or under trained.
  • Learn efficient patterns of motion
  • Pilates works to train several muscles groups at one time.  This will help you to learn proper technique and re-train your body.
  • Be confident and safe
  • Most exercises are performed in a sitting or laying position.  They are also low impact and safe for joints and bones
  • Be challenged
  • Modifications are available to allow each individual to work at a level that will challenge and benefit them
